Description

What if I showed you how I would sell your art?

Not a crit. Me, spending time with your art and working out why someone might want it in their life.

Interesting, no?

I’ll look at your work, your website, what you stand for, the things you’ve made and the things you say. Then I’ll work out how I would persuade someone to buy it. (I have a buyer-psychology framework developed over 45 years in marketing, I call it the Art Sales Six-Step).

And then I’ll show you.

What you get

1. My view of how to sell your art

I’ll identify the angle I think has the most potential for selling your work.

That might be one particular artwork, a whole series, an exhibition, a theme in your practice or something else I’ve discovered while exploring what you do.

I’ll explain what I see, why I think it matters, and who I think it could matter to.

2. The Art Sales Six-Step

I’ll map out the persuasive journey I would use to take someone from first noticing your work to wanting it.

You’ll see what each part of the argument is doing and, importantly, why I’ve chosen it for your particular art.

This isn’t a generic formula with your name inserted.

It’s what I see in your work and one approach to selling it.

3. Your bespoke 90-second Reel

I’ll turn that thinking into a 90-second vertical video.

It will feature your artwork, my voiceover and professionally edited captions, ready for Instagram Reels, TikTok, Facebook Reels or anywhere else you want to use it.

The script is written by me, from scratch.

You’ll receive the full text of the script too.

You can publish the Reel if you like.

Or don’t.

It’s an example of how I would sell your art.

If you’re uncomfortable putting an overtly salesy video on your own social media, you don’t have to. You can use what I’ve discovered in a way that feels like you.

4. Ideas for using the thinking yourself

I’ll suggest ways you could take the ideas further in your own marketing.

That might include things such as:

  • turning the argument into an Instagram carousel
  • making your own reaction or response video
  • using the language in your captions
  • incorporating the ideas into your website
  • using the approach in your newsletter
  • talking about the work differently when you’re at an exhibition
  • developing further content from the same central idea
  • creating an ad either to improve your reach, or to convert

The point isn’t to give you one piece of content.

It’s to give you an idea you can keep using.

5. A little bit of the John Likes Art treatment

I’ll also make some practical suggestions about how the idea could be presented – things like language, tone, typography and colour.

Nothing prescriptive. Nothing that says you need to rebrand yourself.

Just useful ideas about how you might make the message feel like you.

What would you like me to concentrate on?

Whatever makes most sense for you right now.

It could be:

One important artwork

Perhaps you’ve got a painting you really want to sell and can’t quite find the words for.

A high-value piece

We can concentrate on the work that really matters financially.

An upcoming exhibition

I’ll look at the exhibition as a whole and find the story that could make people want to come.

A collection or series

We’ll find the idea that connects the work and gives people a reason to explore it.

Your wider practice

Perhaps the most useful thing is to step back and work out what I see when I look at everything you do.

If you’re not sure, that’s fine.

I can run with what grabs me.

And the goal?

To sell your art.

That’s what we’re trying to do.

I can’t promise that it will.

We can’t force people to buy.

But I can promise that I’m going to approach your work with selling in mind.

I’ll use everything I’ve learned about persuasion and buyer psychology to find the connection between your art and somebody else’s needs, desires, values or imagination.

No-one buys art because they’ve been told what it is.

They buy it because, somehow, it has become important to them.

That’s the bit I’m looking for.

You don’t have to become salesy

This is important.

You may look at my Reel and think:

“I couldn’t possibly talk about my own work like that.”

Good.

You don’t have to.

The Reel is my demonstration of the argument I think could sell your work. You can take the underlying idea and express it in your own voice.

In fact, part of what I’ll give you is language you can use without sounding like a salesperson.

I’m not trying to turn you into a marketer.

I’m here to help you get better at communicating why your work matters.

You can come back

This doesn’t have to be a one-off.

You can come back whenever you’ve got something new to sell or talk about:

  • a new artwork
  • a new collection
  • an exhibition
  • a limited edition
  • a new body of work
  • or simply a different story you want to tell about your practice

We can develop your story, get deeper each time. Or maybe you’re doing something fresh. I’ll find the angle.

Six artists a month

I’m limiting John Likes Art to six artists each month.

Although I really love it, it takes a lot out of me. The time I spend looking, thinking, making connections and working out what I would say if I were selling your art.

It’s new-ish, so there’s a founding price: £97. It won’t always be this way.

Once I can say “I did this and the £4,000 piece sold”, once I have the testimonials, the price will go up. It might even become the main thing I do.

And when the six places are gone, bookings close until the following month.
